Magazine Development

Here is the development progress of my Magazine, I will put all of my ideas here and reflect on the decisions that I make.

I decided to choose AutoLuxury since "AutoLuxury" stands out as a compelling brand name for an automotive magazine due to its seamless association with cars and elegance. The term "Luxury" immediately evokes a sense of opulence, style, and high-end experiences, suggesting that the magazine will delve into the premium and luxurious aspects of the automotive world. This name not only targets affluent readers who have a penchant for luxury cars, upscale vehicles, and a refined automotive lifestyle but also draws those who aspire to these high-end experiences, positioning the magazine as a source of inspiration and aspiration. Importantly, while "AutoLuxury" implies a focus on high-end cars, it doesn't limit the magazine to vehicle reviews; it encompasses various facets of the automotive world, including travel in luxury cars, high-performance vehicles, and the luxury car culture. Ultimately, "AutoLuxury" exudes elegance and prestige, attracting a specific audience seeking a more refined and exclusive take on the automotive industry while maintaining broad appeal among those who appreciate the opulent and high-quality aspects of the automotive world.

Stuart Hall: Representation Theory

2. Meanings, Representation, and Stereotypes

Stuart Hall's Representation Theory explores the concept of representation in the context of media and society.

a. Representation refers to how symbols, images, and language are used to convey and construct meaning in media and culture.

b. Meaning in representation theory is not fixed but rather socially constructed and contingent upon various factors such as culture, ideology, and power dynamics.

c. Stereotypes are simplified and often oversimplified depictions or ideas about particular social groups, which can be based on generalizations or biases.

d. Stereotypes are used in media for various reasons, including simplifying complex information, reinforcing existing societal norms, or serving the interests of those in power. They can also be used to create easily recognizable characters or situations for storytelling purposes.

e. Social groups are often represented in the media in ways that can either reflect or distort their actual characteristics and experiences. These representations can influence public perceptions, reinforce or challenge stereotypes, and impact the social dynamics of the groups being depicted. Representation in media includes:

  • Gender/Sexuality
  • Religion
  • LGBT
  • Race/Ethnicity
  • Social Class
  • Disability
  • Place

3. Social Groups Stereotyped in Indonesia

The representation of Chinese-Indonesian social groups in Indonesia has been a complex and evolving issue, influenced by historical, political, and social factors. Here are both a positive and a negative aspect of how they have been represented.

Positive Side:

Cultural Diversity: In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the cultural diversity that Chinese-Indonesians bring to Indonesia. This positive representation highlights their contributions to the country's rich tapestry of culture, art, and cuisine. Celebrations of Chinese New Year, for example, are now widely accepted and integrated into the national cultural calendar, reflecting a more inclusive and multicultural Indonesia.

Negative Side:

Historical Stereotypes and Discrimination: Historically, Chinese-Indonesians have faced negative stereotypes and discrimination in Indonesia. This has included portrayals of Chinese-Indonesians as "outsiders" or economic threats, which have perpetuated social prejudices. Discriminatory policies and violence, such as the anti-Chinese riots in 1998, have caused fear and harm within this community.

It's important to note that the representation of Chinese-Indonesians in Indonesia is not uniform and varies across different media, regions, and time periods. While positive changes have occurred, challenges related to discrimination and prejudice still persist in some aspects of Indonesian society. Efforts continue to be made to improve the overall representation and treatment of Chinese-Indonesians and foster a more inclusive and tolerant society.

MAGAZINES: TARGETING AUDIENCES THROUGH DEMOGRAPHICS AND PSYCHOGRAPHICS

Here are my notes from a lesson about how media companies target audiences. I worked as a part of a group but contributed to the discussion. I have since digitalised the notes.

Reflection:

I enjoyed participating in this group discussion as I was able to learn about some things that my friends knew which I didn't know. It took us a while to decide on the two magazines but once we did, we were able to efficiently and effectively analyse the way the two magazines were able to target different audiences based purely on the covers. What I found difficult was trying to work with a particular group member who seemed to want to just waste time joking around. I wasn't happy about it but I put up with it anyway.

Media Theory:
Uses and Gratifications Theory (Blulmer & Katz):
The Uses and Gratifications Theory suggests that individuals actively choose and consume media content to satisfy specific needs and desires. When applied to automotive magazines, it means that readers turn to these publications for various reasons or gratifications:

Information and Knowledge: Readers may seek automotive magazines to gather information about the latest car models, technology, features, and industry news. They want to stay informed and up-to-date on developments in the automotive world.

Entertainment: Automotive magazines often include engaging and entertaining content such as reviews, editorials, and feature stories. Readers may enjoy the entertainment value of these articles, which can be both informative and enjoyable.

Social Connection: For many, reading automotive magazines provides a sense of belonging to a community of fellow car enthusiasts. These readers may enjoy the sense of camaraderie and shared passion that comes from being part of this community.

Inspiration: Some individuals turn to automotive magazines for inspiration. They may dream of owning specific cars or embarking on road trips and find motivation and ideas within the pages of these magazines.

Validation and Affirmation: Reading automotive magazines can validate readers' existing interests and preferences. If they are passionate about cars, seeing their interests reflected in the content can affirm their choices and interests.

Escapism: Automotive magazines offer a form of escapism, allowing readers to temporarily escape from their daily lives and immerse themselves in the world of cars, travel, and adventure.

Weekly Progress

Here is my weekly progress and rough planning for Magazine Project.

WEEK 1

In Week 1, I was absent because I need to go out of town for health purposes. I miss several topics and knowledge but hopefully I'm able to catch up with all of the materials in the subject by analyzing my friends blogs and seeing Mr. Nick's blogger to see important information that I've missed.

WEEK 2

In week two, we were introduced to media representation theory by Stuart Hall. I think it really relates to the magazine project. On Friday, we were introduced to the new media language words to analyze and describe the features of a magazine. I find it confusing for the first time but finally came up with the idea as Mr. Nick explains the material repeatedly and as we analyze a magazine together in the class. Forgot to mention that we were also given a homework to analyze the front cover of a magazine, I found that the homework was easier than I expected but I feel like I didn't put my best effort on it. I really must put my best on the next project.

WEEK 3

-Discuss Stuart Hall's representation theory

-Analyzed two front cover in detail

-Started a mini analysis of a double page spread

-Took photos of Magazines in my Dad's Workshop

Problem: I'm still debating on what Magazine genre to choose, between the Automotive or Fashion genre

Solution: I stick on what's on my head and my plan right now

Reflection:

One quote from Stuart Hall that lingers in my mind "Media doesn't reflect meaning, it creates meaning". That statement alone can change one's self, as it gives clarity to the perception of reality and/or life itself, like it did mine. This media lessons isn't just about media, making movies, or analyzing magazines, it is something we can apply and utilize in our life. I did a change in the format of my weekly progress writing due to my teacher's idea for the formatting.

WEEK 4

  • Put magazines up on the database
  • Tried to complete statement of intent
  • Started on the magazine development

Problems: My time management; I could not think of a subheading for the double page spread.

Magazine Statement of Intent

Here is my statement of intent for the Component 1 Magazine Project

Reflection:
Completing this assignment proved to be a challenging endeavor for me. The lack of inspiration and understanding lingered until the morning of the submission deadline, where a sudden clarity dawned upon me. Fortunately, with a newfound sense of comprehension, I embarked on the task, making a conscious effort not to rush the process. Despite nearly finishing before the deadline, two remaining sentences lingered as a reminder of the time constraints.

When questioned about the completion of the assignment, I truthfully acknowledged that I had not finished due to my own shortcomings in time management. Consequently, I faced the appropriate disciplinary measures for my incomplete submission. It's worth noting that the inquiry did not delve into the progress of the assignment; rather, it centered on its completion, a fact I did not dispute. Acknowledging my lapse in time management, I accepted responsibility without offering excuses, recognizing that any discussion on progress might have been misconstrued as an attempt to evade consequences.

This experience served as a valuable lesson, prompting me to reflect on the importance of effective time management. I now understand the significance of seeking inspiration within the allocated timeframe, ensuring that deadlines are met without compromising the quality of work. Moving forward, I am committed to applying this lesson to enhance my productivity and meet future deadlines successfully.
