Self-Reflection:

Theres nothing much to say here until the next year where we get everything rollin'. All I know is that we must start the filming process ASAP cause we got no time to lose.

Location Scout & Risk Assessment

Here are a few locations we've looked at aswell as the potential risks of these locations - Completed by Carrick & Kaka

Self-Reflection:

I must mention that I'm worthy of being credited the most in here as I've contributed the most in doing this Location Scout & Risk Assessment. My other members may trashtalk me about this but I don't care, all I wanna know is at least I've done some major progress for finally contributing in this group. Doing this project is absolutely fun and enjoyable at the same time despite how time consuming it was since the locations I've picked are relatively far from Denpasar which is in Uluwatu. But some sacrifices are need of course to achieve an exceptional result, so therefore I've picked the best places that I've research in Google Maps, not gonna lie I'm the best at researching good and hidden places online, my team must thank and give appreciation for me.

Classwork

Here is a classwork we were assigned to do individually where we learnt about camera angles and shots, mise en scene, different sounds, and edits.

CAMERA

Camera angles/shots are different ways of using the position and angles of a camera to convey emotions and tell a story.

Heres a video of about camera angles that my teacher had suggested me to watch in my freetime:

Camera Angles

Here are materials from my teacher's presentation that I refer back to for a better understand of my projects.

Camera Movements

Here's a table my teacher made to help me gain a better understanding of camera movements.

Fixed

Camera remains static

Calm, peace, normal

Push in

Camera moves slowly toward subject

Brings the audience closer, more involved, getting more serious.

Pull out

Camera moves slowly away from subject

Takes audience away from the action, leaving a character. Detaching from subject

Pan

Side to side, camera fixed

Reveal information, mirrors natural head movement of the audience.

Tilt

Up and down, camera fixed

Same as pan, just a different direction

Dolly

Camera moves around freely

More immersive, we are moving inside the subjects world, we feel part of the action

Tracking

Camera moves around on tracks

Similar to dolly, but smoother.

Crane

Reveals the epic size of the setting, landscape.

Handheld

Camera is shakey

Very natural, immersive. High energy

Zoom

Zoom

Brings audience closer to budget. Draws our attention to something.

Here's a video I made with a friend to explore and test out different camera angles and movements:

MIS-EN-SCENE

Here's a slide that my teacher has made to help me learn different terminologies of mise-en-scene:

Visual examples of each MES (Credit to Kristine blog post):

Here is a video a friend gave me to gain a better understanding of mis-en-scene:

Here is a video I watched that helped me understand MES better through movie analysis:

SOUND

Here is a table my teacher put in a presentation to help me understand sound terminologies:

Description

Effect

Diegetic sound

Sound that can be heard by the characters within the media text.

Add a sense of realism. Reveal information to characters (and then audience)

Non diegetic sound

Sound that can only be heard by the audience.

Enhance meaning, create an emotional response in the audience

Trans diegetic sound

Sound that transitions from one to the other.

Creates a link between the audience and the world. More immersive

Here is a video I watched online to gain a further knowledge of sounds:

Here is a table my teacher had gather to help me understand better of non-diegetic tones:

Description

Effect

Melodic

Positive and pleasing connotations

Enhances a positive scene. Create positive emotions in the audience.

Discordant

Harsh and unpleasant connotations.

Enhance negative scenes.  Create suspense, tension, anxiety

Contrapuntal

Has an opposite tone to the on-screen visuals.

Adds deeper meaning to scenes. Insight into the character's thoughts. Maybe they seek pleasure in doing bad things.

Here are some videos examples that I've watched online to helped me gain a futher understanding of non-diegetic tones:

Melodic Example:

Discordant Example:

Contrapuntal Example:

EDITING

Here are some terminologies my teacher has given out:

Continuity Editing

Non continuity editing

  • Straight cut (cut)

  • Eyeline match

  • Shot /reverse shot

  • Cutaway / Insert

*Match cut

  • Cross cut (parallel cut)

  • Flash back

  • Flash forward

  • Jump cut

*Match cut

STORYBOARD

Here is a storyboard that my teacher had made me with different layouts and descriptions to gave me a better understanding of creating my own storyboard:

Here is my first storyboard I did for my advertisement project:

Self-Reflection:

I've managed to complete this classwork on time, despite the fact that I had to rush everything in at the last second, this gotta be one of the most exhausting blogwork that I've done. To be honest, I kinda lost track with this classwork as I'm too busy on completing multiple tasks in the group for the project. So as soon as I had spare time, I decide to start this blogwork ASAP and not to postpone it any longer as it would be soon graded. I'm actually satisfied with how I did in this blogwork since I've managed to gather up crucial information that I've took from my teachers blog to develop a further understanding about cameras, MES, sound, edits, and storyboards. I will further apply and implement this knowledge that I've recapped to create a better concepts on the music video project.

Screen Test

To find a star for our music video we need to conduct a screen test. Here is a video of our class's group audition. We did this as a class. Completed by - Giorgio & Carrick

Advantages
The advantages of conducting a screen test like this is that we had access to over 20 people in the same room, which allowed us to see the various personas of each individual in a very time and cost effective manner. Not only that, but 90% of the potential stars knew the lyrics to this song which made things a whole lot easier too. People also were able to come out of their shell as this style of group screen testing made it so much more comfortable for everyone involved.

Disadvantages
The disadvantages of having this style of screen test is that we could not analyse in detail all 20+ candidates. This made it a little bit more difficult to try and see which candidate would best fit the persona that we're looking for. Another thing that would be a disadvantage is that the personas in this video may have been overexaggerated as they were performing with friends. This may not reflect their individual or solo performance which is something we must consider.

Considerations
There were some people we considered for the role of the star in our music video, one of them was shown at exactly 3:00 (the one with the glasses). He personifies exactly who we are looking to cast in our music video. His name is Jaden Mutty and he perfectly encapsulates the kind of persona needed. We like his style in front of the camera: very outgoing, open, not shy, and not afraid to be himself. There were others there we may want to consider but so far he's the best of the lot. There were some there who weren't even lip syncing to the same song, perhaps they were too shy in front of the camera and we do not want to cast anyone like that.

Self-Reflection:

Knowing that we are going to do the screen test as a whole big class I'm not as stumped as I'm supposed to be, but unfortunately Mr Nick chose a song which I'm quite unfamiliar with but I've ever heard of. Don't get me wrong, QUEEN was an absolute masterpiece as a rockstar, but I'm not used to listening to their songs so I just gotta try my best to stay confident in my screen test. The results was satisfactory in the end even though I expect that it could be much a lot better.

Song Research

Here is the research we did in detail on the song "Leave The Door Open" by Bruno Mars in 2021 which we chose to do for our music video project - Completed by Carrick & Kaka

Here's a brief background behind the song by Bruno Mars which we quoted from https://silksonic.fandom.com/wiki/Leave_The_Door_Open#Background_and_release

In an interview with New Zealand radio DJ Zane Lowe for the Apple Music podcast Beats 1, Anderson .Paak said the song required a lot of "patience and delicate" to create. He added, "A lot of meat went into this song." Mars lamented the lack of live performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, adding "While I'm writing songs, that's a part of my whole thing. It goes to like, 'I can't wait till people hear this.' And it's also, 'I can't wait to play this for people. I can't wait to be with my band.'"

In late February 2021, Bruno Mars and Paak announced on social media platforms the formation of their new band Silk Sonic and group's first studio album An Evening with Silk Sonic. On March 5, 2021, shortly after the announcement of An Evening with Silk Sonic, "Leave the Door Open" was released as the first single of the aforementioned project alongside the "Silk Sonic Intro".

We chose this song because it fits the persona of our potential star, and it's a very mainstream song which will allow us to unleash our creativity into this passion project. We agreed that its a song we can all listen and jam to which will make the progression of our project so much easier. Not only that, but original singer sings in an American accent. People with American accents are easier to cast in Indonesia as most Indonesians who are fluent in English speak with an American accent, making it more believable to people watching our lip synced music video as it wouldn't really fit or be right if someone with a British, Australian, or local Indonesian accent were singing. Furthermore, it helps with the social media as we are able to seek a wider audience, whereas if we chose a Christian song, we would have to cater to a more niche audience which is a lot harder to do in our case.

We intend on challenging the traditional conventions of this music video by making our star a young teenage Indonesian who is fluent in English. This allows us to further develop our star into a person who produces this style of music. Our star being so young but with so much life experience is what will make our star stand out. He's intelligent, but dumb at the same time. This encapsulates a lot of teenagers who are heading out into the world and they are the kind of people who we are targeting with our music video. We want our star to be seen as a role model, someone who our audience can learn from. "Mistakes made by our star will not be repeated by our audience" is what one of our friends said should be our key focus of our music video.

Self-Reflection:

Me and Carrick were mainly assigned to accomplish this task which took us quiet a while but after we researched the fandom of Bruno Mars and Silk Sonic it helped up to progress much quicker and as a result it helps us to gather information efficiently for this part, and move to the next part.

Storyboard

Here is the storyboard for our project at different locations - Completed by Giorgio & Jaden

The storyboards were planned out the way that we wanted them to be. Giorgio and Jaden discussed this together based off the notes we all made as a group to try and bring a message to the audience of a man who gets rejected on a date by a girl. However, our teacher had some feedback to give us. One major thing he told us was that the chronology of our storyboard didn't make sense and that there was no meaning to it. We listened to his feedback and took it all on board. He suggested that we include a scene where the girl comes in and sees that the star is a bit crazy, and then runs out and finds another man. This made a lot more sense than what we thought of so we decided to take that on board. Unfortunately, our teacher set out a deadline which didn't leave us much time to insert and fix these changes to our storyboard.

Self-Reflection:

This has gotta be the most hillarious storyboard that I've ever seen throughout my life. The concept and design of it was just very mindblowing and of course this art of masterpiece was designed by the one and only Master Wong who's always in the thick of it or to put it in simple terms "always invloved". I didn't really care much as I'm not assigned to this kind of task and it was mainly Gio's role and responsibilty to take care of all of this until he finally asked me to made up a rough storyboard of the second storyboard template which I was able tofinished 3 slides only until Jaden took over my part. The funny part about this is when our teacher Mr. Nick came up to our group table and spesifically asked me and Jaden to explain the scenes and storyline of the storyboard. Gio and Carrick act as if Mr Nick wasn't in front of them and expect me and Jaden to do all the talking. When Mr Nick came up to me and ask me to elaborate regarding the storyboard I was super stumped, it's as if being a fake doctor and conducting a first surgery on a real life patient. I tried to explain within my best capacity but then finally Gio decide to stood in and explain everything he knew about the storyboard since he wss the on designing it and responsible for it. Not bad enough, he turns out to be a racist artist who expresses his jokes and sarcasm on a blank sheet of storyboard and as a result he got shout out by Mr Nick regarding to that. HAHAHA sooo funny, I hope he learnt his lesson after that one.

Lyric Sheet

Here is a copy of the lyric sheet we annotated to give a better idea of each scene - Completed by Carrick, Giorgio, Jaden, and Angkasa

Self-Reflection:

This lyric-sheet really take up the full brain capacity of each group members as we were forced to pour out all our creativity and gather all of it as a scene to put in the lyric sheet. Gio assigned me and Carrick to think of scenes to put in each lyrics but it ended up non-sense so Gio had to came up with a different concept, like usual it's always him but whatever at least it's done.

Moodboard

Here is a moodboard for our music video concept - Completed by Giorgio, Carrick, Jaden, and Kaka

Self-Reflection:

Our group’s mood board is going to keep us on track with the theme while we’re filming and editing the music video. It’ll help us plan each shot and scene so we avoid big mistakes we can’t fix later. The mood board also gives us a color palette to follow, which will guide us with editing and setting up the scenes. We made it in PowerPoint and used Pinterest for the images, which was simple and easy to access. Everyone played an equal part in finding and putting together the pictures. The only tricky part for me was staying focused on the agreed theme.
